Poplar Gallery.Online invites you to view Lot 175: A Box of Household Linens in gallery1 from December 12, 2009 to April 4, 2010.
In the fall term of 2008, students of Textile Practice: A Cultural Survey taught by Dr Jennifer Salahub at the Alberta College of Art + Design were each given a piece of “antique” household linen purchased from an estate auction. Each student was to consider and create a finished work based on a personal response to the linens. This project brings together the twelve interpretations, showcasing the diversity of individual practices and techniques. Read the curatorial essay by Dr Jennifer Salahub HERE.
Participating artists: Margaret Abrams, Jennifer Akkermans, Julie Baratta, Mary Anne Clarke, Anne Fetterly, Aisling Macken, Heather Murray, Vanessa Riego, Romy Straathoff, Rebecca Taylor, Jasmine Valentina and Michael Yung.
Anjani Khanna’s exhibition of figurative ceramics Myth and Memory continues until February 5 in gallery2.

Today was the vernissage for Lieux de memoire at the Moulin de La Chevrotiere in Deschambault. It was a beautiful day for the roughly two-hour drive from Montreal through the Quebec countryside. The mill was an ideal space, a true “place of memory” fitting with curator Denis Longchamp’s vision for the exhibit.

I have finally completed documenting recollect, a series of handwoven linen, weft kasuri panels dyed using Turkey red (a natural dye process using madder). To view other images visit my website.
I am pleased to share that this work will be shown this summer in Deschambault-Grondines, Quebec for the Biennale international du lin. The theme for the craft venue at La Chevrotière mill is “lieu de mémoire” (places of memory) curated by Denis Longchamps. He writes,
History and memory are related, but distinct concepts. While history turns toward a more or less distant past, memory, anchored in the present moment, interprets it: through memory, we hold on to, forget and rearrange, as we like, the events, images and people who have shaped us. Memory is embodied in “places of memory” in a way that depends on the will of human beings to remember, and to hold on to memory itself.
Other artists taking part in the exhibition include: Sarah Alford, J. Penney Burton, Monique Giard, Rosie Godbout, Veronika Horlik, Michele Lapointe, Dawn McNutt, Vita Plume, Mireille Racine, Alain Taral and Liz Williamson. There are other venues for art and fashion featuring the work of artists and designers from Canada and around the world.
The exhibition runs from June 24 to September 27, 2009. The opening reception will be held Sunday afternoon June 14, 2009. I will be travelling to Quebec in June and will blog the exhibition and related events. Stay tuned…
