Shane Waltener at C4RD

Shane Waltener’s exhibition at C4RD is an exploration of the practice of drawing through needlecraft and lace making. The artist uses textile weaving techniques to create a new series of works. Musical and dance notation, architectural plans, and scientific graphs and models have been used as patterns for making lace. These 2D images and resulting woven outcomes are shown together highlighting the process of reinterpretation of these coded visual languages, and a re-evaluation of the traditional craft of bobbin lace.

Alongside these works, a couple of Garland pieces will be shown in the exhibition. These are interactive installations, a series started at Tate Britain in 2006, where visitors are invited to weave in space using yarn and various needlecraft techniques. The outcome of two of these works will be shown in the exhibition, while a new piece, Garland #22, will be created over the course of the exhibition by members of the public.

Oriane Stender’s Dead Soldier Project

I started the Dead Soldier Project when the number of US soldiers killed in Afghanistan (and/or Iraq; it’s been so long I can’t even remember) reached 1,000. The Times printed a tiny picture of each dead (American) soldier, along with their name, age and hometown. These thousand faces, with just the briefest identifying information called out to be made into something beyond a statistic, so I saved them and started to make a quilt out of them. When the number reached 2,000, then 3,000 and 4,000, I realized it would never end. I couldn’t go on processing these deaths. I had to leave the project unfinished, which seems apt.

Goodbye Turdbrains! Mimi Leung at Tenderpixel

Tenderpixel Gallery invites you to Mimi Leung’s summer show.

Mimi paints drawings and draws paintings, and uses lots of colour on top of her paintidrawings.

You might marvel at the perfect symmetry of hundreds of hand-drawn ant paths. Be it a cow, a dog, or a woodland log, you may find these images ‘cute.’ However, beware, upon closer inspection you will realise that these are a collection of Mimi’s more sinister thought manifestations. Mimi’s clean line movements and bold colour designs are her way of confronting death, decay and the things she has seen yet attempted to suppress into the back of her mind.

GOODBYE TURDBRAINS! is the result of her mental journey.

You may be disgusted, you may be fascinated, or both… this is bloody life transformed into bloody art.
